Day Trading Success Tip No 3

The next important consideration for a day trader is: Low Transaction Costs.

The more you trade, the more important it is to have low transaction costs. There are two extremes in trading:

1) The scalper, who will trade hundreds of times a day, and

2) The investor, who may only trade a few times a year

If you have had the experience of being a professional scalper (most likely as an exchange floor trader) you will know the importance of having low transaction costs.

If on the other hand you are approaching day trading from the investor end of the spectrum, you will not be as aware of the impact of costs on your trading results.

Let’s say you are a small trader, trading one lot (one contract at a time) positions, and you trade on average 10 times a day. Let’s also assume that you trade for 200 days a year (you take a lot of holidays - one of the luxuries of being a successful independent trader!)

If you pay $50 a round turn (buy and sell one contract) your annual commission charge will be $100,000!

If you pay $10 a round turn, your annual commission charge will be a more reasonable $20,000.

If you pay $2 a round turn, your annual commission charge will only be $4,000!

When you consider the impact of commissions across a whole year, it is easy to see how impactful they are on overall success.
