Here’s my David Letterman-style “top 10″ list of the last words traders utter before losing money in the market, and why you should avoid making these mistakes:

10) “Why oh why did I take my pool man’s stock tip?” (blindly relying on the advice of others–nothing against your pool man, you understand!)

9) “Earnings season, schmearnings season! My stock has a LOT more upside potential!” (failing to realize the importance of earnings)

“I’m not worried about it! My stock will continue to hold its own IN SPITE of the market’s downturn!” (betting against the overall market conditions).

7) “Sure, I’ve lost a lot of money recently in the market, but watch me make up for it on THIS trade!” (trying to “get back at the market” for previous losses, instead of quietly regrouping and improving your trading technique).

6) “SEC inquiry? WHAT SEC inquiry?” (Failing to keep up with recent news releases on your stock).

5) “My stock is developing a new product that’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, so I’m going to buy it NOW before the rest of the world finds out!” (Buying “story stocks” that may or may not have strong earnings).

4) “I’m going to buy stock XYZ! It’s been beaten down so low it can’t HELP but move back up again!” (Wasting your time on loser stocks).

3) “I’m going to jump on this stock the MOMENT the market opens, because I just KNOW it’s gonna take off today!” (Impatience/Failing to wait a few minutes into the market day to get a better idea of market conditions)

2) “Hey, my stock is falling! Here’s my opportunity to buy EVEN MORE shares while the price is still low! ” (”Averaging down” on a stock– never a really good idea!)

….And finally, the NUMBER 1 thing traders utter before losing money in the stock market…

1) “What do you MEAN my 10,000 shares of XYZ company have dropped from $2.50 to 35 cents a share?” (Buying penny stocks, and worse, a LOT of shares of them!)
